Identifying your skin type:

It is important to know what kind of skin you have. This will affect what products you use and what services will suit your needs the best.

  • Sensitive Skin: may sting, burn, or feel ‘spicy’ after product use

  • Normal Skin: clear and not sensitive

  • Dry Skin: flaky, itchy, or rough

  • Oily Skin: shiny and greasy

  • Combination Skin: dry in some areas and oily in others

Tips for getting and maintaining healthy skin:

Always check product labels and ingredients

  • The products you choose will depend on your skin type. If you have acne-prone skin, look for cleansers and moisturizers that say “oil-free” or “non-comedogenic”

  • Non-comedogenic means it is a product specially formulated to not cause blocked pores.

  • If you have sensitive skin, use mild fragrance free products. Fragrances can leave skin feeling irritated and dry. Always double check products that say “unscented” as many of them may contain masking fragrances that can irritate your skin.

Wash

  • Be sure to pick a facial cleanser that is right for your skin type. Soap made for the body is typically not suitable for facial use.

  • Wash your face with lukewarm water. Too hot of water can cause heightened skin sensitivity and strip the skin of its natural oils, which may sound ideal to some but it can actually cause you to start over producing those oils over time.

  • Wash your face in the morning and in the evening. When you wake up in the morning it is important to flush away any oil buildup and possible bacteria that could be on your pillowcase. In the evening you want to wash off the days accumulation of pollutants, sweat, and other debris that you picked up throughout your day.

  • If you are using a washcloth or other reusable material to wash your face, always use a clean item each time. Damp or wet cloth allows for rapid growth of bacteria, you may not always be able to see it, but you do not want to transfer any of that build up onto your face.

Exfoliate

  • Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the outer layer of your skin. While some people believe that this improves the appearance of their skin, it’s not for everyone. If not done properly, it could do more harm than good. Always discuss with your dermatologist or esthetician what exfoliants are right for you.

  • It is important to exfoliate your face twice a week at most. You skin cells turn themselves over every few weeks, but this does not always mean they leave the surface of your skin when they die off. This turnover can cause build up and form rough patches, or even get into your pores and cause acne. Exfoliation helps shed these dead skin cells to allow your fresh skin to shine.

  • Exfoliation can also help give you more radiant, youthful completion, and reduce dark spots.

  • Over exfoliation can cause irritation. If you experience overly red skin or irritation reduce the frequency of your exfoliation.

Moisturize

  • While moisturizer will help nourish, it also helps protect your skin. It lays atop your skin and traps moisture in the layers below while shielding you from pollutants in the air.

  • You should moisturize in the morning and evening each day. Your morning routine should include an SPF 30+ moisturizer to help block the sun’s harmful UV rays. Over exposure to the sun can accelerate signs of aging (like roughness, wrinkles, dark spots, and loss of elasticity). In the evening after you thoroughly wash your face, apply a moisturizer that is a little more dense and nourishing.

  • During the day your skincare routine should be focus on defense of your skin while your night routine is more focused on offense. Your skin cells turnover more rapidly and effectively as you sleep, so this product plays an imperative role in nudging them along.

Extra Tip

  • Change your pillowcases regularly. It is recommended that you change your pillow cases for fresh ones every 3-4 days.

  • Your pillowcases begin to accumulate oils, residual skincare, dust, and any debris that is found in your home will find their way into your pillow. Laying on this undesirable mix for extended periods can lead to irritation and acne.
